Wilbur H. “Shorty” Heslop (1931-2016)

Wilbur H. “Shorty” Heslop, 85, of Madrid formerly of Cambridge, Iowa passed away Thursday, April 28, 2016, at the Madrid Home in Madrid.

Shorty was born March 17, 1931, in Eagle Grove, Iowa, the son of Wilbur H. and Mae E. Heslop. He attended school at Eagle Grove until he joined the Navy in 1948. Shorty served aboard the USS GURKE DD-783 during the Korean War and the Inchon Invasion as a sonar man from 1949 to 1952.

On August 14, 1966, he was united in marriage to Helen Maxine Holm in Delta, Iowa. They resided in Cambridge from 1969 until 2008 when they moved to Ankeny for two years before moving to Boone in 2010.

Shorty was an over the road truck driver all his life with several companies before retiring in 2008, after 25 years with Johnsrud Transport. While at Johnsrud, he received many awards for safe driving and top fuel mileage. On June 15, 2001, he was recognized by the Iowa Motor Truck Association as an “Iowa Outstanding Professional Driver” with well over one million miles. Shorty also owned and operated a business and apartments in Ames from 1977 to 1984. During that time, on September 23, 1979, he was inducted to the Brotherhood of the Iowa State Chapter of Acacia Fraternity as an honorary member. He and Helen also enjoyed 11 years of travel in their motorhome.

Shorty was a lifetime member of the American Legion in Cambridge and the VFW in Maxwell.

Shorty is survived by his wife of 49 years, Helen of Madrid. He was preceded in death by his parents.

Visitation will be 2-4 p.m. Sunday, May 1, at Rasmusson-Bacon Funeral Home in Maxwell. Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Monday, May 2, also at the funeral home. Interment will be 2 p.m. at Garrett Cemetery near Delta, Iowa.

In lieu of flowers, it is requested that donations be made to the Madrid Home in Madrid in memory of Shorty.
