The Rev. Samuel Jones, after an illness of several weeks, died at his home in Perry Thursday, December 28, 1893, aged about 74 years. He was a native of of Virginia and resided in that state until the opening of the Rebellion, when his staunch Union views made it desirable and wise to seek more congenial surroundings by removing to the North. One or two brother sided with the South. He was an earnest the popular preacher and was in ministerial work for nearly if not quite half a century. Some 25 years ago he was pastor of the Nevada parish for two years and subsequently presiding elder of this district for four years. He was very popular with the old soldiers, being a frequent welcome speaker and visitor at their gatherings. He was an honorary member of the Perry G. A. R. Post. In his death an aged wife and three daughter and many other relatives are called to morn the loss of a worthy husband, father, friend and man. His married daughters are Mrs. J. D. Ferner of Nevada and Mrs. Mary G. Preston of Des Moines. He was held in high esteem by the people of Perry and his funeral services and burial at that city Sunday afternoon were attended by a large concourse. He was prominent Mason and his obsequies were under the supervision of that ancient fraternity.
