Eighteen Year Old Lad Dead As Result of Assault

The death on Monday last, of a young man named Ralph Swan, at the home near Angus of Arthur Hasty, where Swan was employed, has occasioned considerable excitement both in the locality where the death occurred and at the Orphan's Home in Council Bluffs. The young man had been adopted by a Dallas county farmer but was now with the Hastys as stated. On Sunday evening he went with the family to Angus and spent the church hour at the Goodwin home while the Hasty family were at church. When leaving the Goodwin home he was assaulted by two or three people and severely handled before the assailants realized that hey had the wrong man. Swan told of the attack when he rejoined the Hasty people but would not mention names. The next day about noon as Swan was sitting in the yard watching the proceedings of the others, he suddenly threw up his hands and dropped dead. A physician hastily summoned pronounced the cause of death to be heart failure and it is believed this was the result of the attack the night before at Angus as Swan was in poor health at best only able to do light work. The county officials of Boone county have been making an investigation.
