From Rasmusson-Bacon Funeral Home & Crematory obituary, Nevada and Maxwell, Story County, Iowa:

Carl Eugene Switzer
October 1, 1923 - April 1, 2016

Carl Eugene Switzer, 92, was welcomed by our Lord and Savior into Heaven on April 1, 2016.

Carl lived and farmed in Shipley, Iowa, all his life until he retired in 1989. He married Juanita Day Switzer in 1943 and, together, they raised a family with two daughters, Carla Alice and Nancy Leigh. Following retirement, he and Juanita lived in Nevada and Ames.

Early on, Carl attended Iowa State University. While building up his farm, he also worked at R.H. Donnelley and became a shift supervisor. Eventually, he farmed full-time and became recognized for his farming skill and success. For a time, he farmed land in Texas as well as in Iowa. Following retirement, he and Juanita traveled extensively, spending time in New Mexico, Texas and Florida to escape the challenges of Iowa winters. One time, they put 40,000 miles on their new car in its first year. In the last several years, traveling became difficult for them, so they stayed put, and family and friends came to Iowa to visit. The birds and squirrels in their backyard became a constant source of entertainment and enjoyment. After Juanita died in January 2015, Carl continued living in his home in Nevada, playing “grandparent” to neighborhood children and becoming an ever-reliable source of candy, treats and good cheer. He will be remembered fondly and lovingly by many and will be missed by his family, friends and neighbors.

Carl attended Nevada Baptist Church. Before that, he attended Campus Baptist Church, where he was an usher for many years.

Carl died in the early hours of April 1 after a brief illness and is survived by his two daughters, one brother, Dr. Richard Switzer of Tucson, Arizona, and many nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Saturday, April 9, at the Nevada Baptist Church, 210 W 3rd Street. Family will greet friends one hour prior to the service. Private inurnment will take place at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Nevada Baptist Church.

Rasmusson-Bacon Funeral Home in Nevada is handling arrangements.
