George Leverne “Bud” Carter was born February 3, 1930 to George W. and Esther F. (Ludtke) Carter in Ames, Iowa. He graduated from Ames High School in 1948; and Iowa State University in 1951. George served in the United States Air Force and Air Force R.O.T.C. He and Mary Elizabeth Taylor were married on June 15, 1951 in Ames.

George owned and operated Carter Press, Inc. in Ames’ campustown for 31 years. George became a certified real estate appraiser and continued in business for another 5 years. He was a member of the Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity and Rotary Club. Life was a grand adventure for George. He loved travels with Mary, family, and friends to Mexico, Ten Mile Lake in Minnesota, and the western U.S. He enjoyed books, newspapers, magazines; music; photography; big dogs; collecting; western U.S. history; geology; building/remodeling the family homes; and bakeries. George and Mary retired to the coast of Oregon and lived in Gold Beach, Ore. and Tucson, Ariz.

George passed away at 86 years of age on March 6, 2016 at Heartwood House, Northcrest Community, in Ames.

He is survived by his wife, Mary Carter of Ames; his children, Steve (Kathy) Carter of Ames, Lori Carter of Santa Rosa, Calif., Kate Carter Frederick of Des Moines and Todd (Erin) Carter of Bothell, Wash.; 11 grandchildren, Matt (Andrea) Carter, Alex Carter, Sarah (Aaron) Shaffer, Rachael (Jonathan) Maves; Saul (Alicia) Stafford, Abigail (Ryan) Delasasse, Daniel (Shontae) Carter, Anna Frederick, Ryan Carter, Julianne Carter, and Kristen Carter; 12 great-grandchildren; his brother-in-law, Bob Taylor of Ames; and his nephews, John Taylor, Jeff (Shelley) Taylor, David Moll and Daniel (Cathy) Moll.

George was preceded in death by his parents; his sister, Virginia C. Moll; and his grandson, Joseph Frederick.

Memorials may be made to Heartwood House c/o Northcrest Foundation. Adams Funeral Home in Ames is assisting the family with arrangements.
