Frances Marie Broom was born on June 6, 1918 on the family farm 4 ¼ miles north of Jewell to Charles W. L. and Anna (Strasky) Clair. Frances was the 12th of 16 siblings. She attended Lyon No. 2 Country School and then was a “hired girl” for area families until her marriage to Paul L. Broom on December 5, 1936 in rural Blairsburg. Paul worked for Cliff Furman and later he and Frances farmed on the Faith Renner farm four miles north and ¾ mile west of Jewell for many years until his death on November 18, 1970. Frances then worked for several area businesses, including Hockman Grocery in Jewell and lived in Stanhope until her marriage to Ansel Swenson in Story City. They divorced and she moved to Jewell. She was a long time member of the Jewell United Church of Christ Church (Federated).
Frances passed away at 97 years of age on February 15, 2016 at Bethany Manor in Story City.
Survivors include two daughters, Mary F. Adams of Rochester, Minn. and Sally (Bruce) Burchfield of Ames; three grandchildren, Andy (Wendy) Lundquist of Stanhope, Christine (Jeff) Dahle of Stewartville, Minn. and Scott Lundquist of McCallsburg; eight great-grandchildren, Jordan (Logan Rexroat) Taylor of Stanhope, Drew Lundquist of Stanhope, Danika Dahle of Stewartville, Jakob Dahle of Stewartville, Madisen, Masen of McCallsburg and Maia Lundquist of McCallsburg; one great-great granddaughter, Zaelie Rexroat of Stanhope; and a sister, June (Kenneth) Egland of Rochester.
She was preceded in death by her parents and 14 brothers and sisters, Mabelle, Blanche, Elizabeth, Florence, Benjamin, Emma, Bertha, Charles, Howard, Lucille, Elmer, Gladys, Clarice, and Gertrude.
