Vera A. Ripkey was born October 14, 1927 to John and Iva (Kersey) Ripkey in Story County, Iowa. Vera graduated from Gilbert High School in 1945 and then attended Buena Vista College for a year and a half. She enlisted as a nurse in the U.S. Army on December 14, 1950 and served until June 10, 1952. She was stationed stateside in California during the Korean War. Vera was self-employed in childcare for 27 years, retiring in 1988. She was a member of the Congregational Church in Gilbert.

Vera passed away at 88 years of age on January 24, 2016 at Riverside North in Ames.

Vera is survived by her sisters, Velva (Jim) Hogfeldt of Rockford, Ill, Theda Gammon of Ames and Virginia Otto of Indian River, Mich.; and many nieces and nephews. Vera is also survived by her very special friend, Kelly Netcott, of which she treated like her adopted son.

She was preceded in death by her parents; two sisters, Arlene Shuey and Marie Hein; and one brother, John Ripkey.
