Obituary From Adams Soderstrum Funeral Home, Story County, Iowa.

Dorothy E. Peter was born on December 26, 1926 to Kurnel and Emily (Holm) Lenning. Her journey in life ended on January 28, 2016 at Mary Greeley Medical Center in Ames, Iowa, surrounded by her loving family.

Dorothy was baptized, confirmed and married at Zion Lutheran Church, in rural Hardin County, Iowa. She graduated from McCallsburg High School. After graduating, she worked as a cook at Iowa State University until she married the love of her life, Melvin Peter, on June 25, 1950. She was proud to share that she had been married for over 65 years. They resided on one of the Peter homesteads where they farmed and raised their children, Calvin (Donalyn) Peter of Osage, Jerilyn (Terry) Rasmusson and Doretta (Don) Hoffmann, all of Story City.

Caring for her family was a priority. She enjoyed sewing, baking and attended many sporting events. She was a proud grandma and great-grandma to: Melissa (Andy) Curry and their children, Kenna and Josie of Elk Point, South Dakota, Ben (Jen) Peter and their children, Kaylee, Karly and Khloe of Plainview, Minnesota, Josh (Kristi) Rasmusson and their children, Raena and Paige of Ankeny, Pete Rasmusson of Palm Beach, California, Drew Rasmusson of West Des Moines, Jon Hoffmann of Oskaloosa and Andrew (Sarah) Hoffmann of Mount Vernon.

She worked for a number of years as a cook at Roland Story Schools and retired in 1979. After retiring, she continued her passion for baking by selling a variety of baked goods at the local Farmers Market and at tea rooms.

Dorothy and Melvin moved to Story City in 1990 and then retired from farming in 1991. She thoroughly enjoyed providing fresh baked cookies to the neighborhood kids. Her kitchen was always a welcome place and where a home cooked meal was made for her grandchildren, as well as their friends. There was always much laughter and conversation around their kitchen table.

Dorothy was an active church member at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in rural Boone and when they moved to Story City, at Immanuel Lutheran Church. She also enjoyed being a member of the American Legion Auxiliary.

Dorothy is also survived by sisters-in law, brothers-in-law; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her father-in-law and mother-in law; her brothers, Jerral Lenning and Kermit Lenning; two infant brothers; sisters-in law and brothers-in law; a daughter-in law; and several nieces and nephew.

She was a wonderful wife, mom, grandma and great-grandma to all and she loved with her whole heart. Her smile and laughter will be remembered by all she touched.
