Dorothy Ruth Johnson was born January 6, 1922 to Oscar and Lena Swenson in Ellsworth, Iowa, one of eight children. She was raised on a farm that was taken by a tornado when she was a small child. The farmhouse was eventually rebuilt, but the transition period was difficult for the family, especially when the snow came.

In August 1950, she married Kenneth Johnson at Bethel Lutheran Church in Story City. They were married for 57 years until his death in 2007. She was a homemaker and caring wife for all those years. Other than an occasional hospital stay, they never spent a night apart or went to bed upset with each other.

They bought their first home at 132 Penn Avenue in Story City in 1955 for $5,000. They would make many improvements over the years on the house and it turned out to be the only home they would own or live in. Dorothy had many friends and relatives who enjoyed visiting with her. Her closest and dearest friend was Opal Mortvedt, who passed away in 1964.

In April 1961, Kenneth and Dorothy adopted their nine year-old son, Michael. He was the love and pride of her life. She never missed one of his football or baseball games in high school and kept scrapbooks of clippings from the Story City, Nevada and Ames sport pages whenever his name was mentioned. A son couldn’t have asked for a more loving and caring mother.

Dorothy passed away at 94 years of age on January 14, 2016 at Bethany Manor in Story City.

Dorothy is survived by her son, Michael and grandson, Robin of Sparks, Nevada; her sister, Gladys Huibsch of Iowa Falls; and many nieces and nephews.

Words cannot express how much she was loved and how much she will forever be missed.
