Obituary From Adams Soderstrum Funeral Home, Story County, Iowa.

LaVerna Vivian Flemmer was born February 5, 1929 to Theodore and Lydia (Riede) Baer on a farm near Theodore, South Dakota. She was baptized May 9, 1929 and confirmed July 5, 1942 at Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church in Theodore. Growing up on the family farm, she and her brothers and sisters created their own entertainment playing the usual kids games. She especially enjoyed playing softball. LaVerna went to country school through 8th grade and then attended Java (S.D.) High School. After graduation, she attended the South Dakota Beauty Academy in Sioux Fall, SD. Upon completion of her training, LaVerna worked in the Classic Beauty Shop in Selby, SD for one year and then bought the shop and ran it for five more years. It was in Selby that LaVerna met Melvin Flemmer and they were married June 1, 1952 in Bowdle, SD. The couple moved to Brookings, SD where Melvin was a student at South Dakota State University and LaVerna worked in the Agriculture Department at the college. Following Melvin’s graduation, they moved to Ames in June of 1957, and it’s been their home ever since. She was a member of St. Andrew’s Lutheran Church in Ames from 1957 to 1992, and was currently a member of Bethesda Lutheran Church. Throughout the years, she has been active in the church volunteering with Sunday School, Vacation Bible School, and the food pantry. She also volunteered in her children’s schools. Morning coffee time with her neighborhood friends was a highlight for many years. LaVerna was very creative and enjoyed sharing her many talents by making handmade gifts, sewing, knitting, and especially quilting. She was a member of the quilting group, “The Northwestern Quilters” from 1992 to 2008. LaVerna truly loved having her family together, playing cards, and cooking delicious meals for them.

LaVerna passed away at 86 years of age on January 12, 2016 at the Madrid Home in Madrid Iowa.
