....A large number of Masons from Ames accompanied by many members of Boone Lodge of Masons and Brotherhood of R. W. Conductors went to Gilbert on a special train Tuesday to attend the funeral of Archy McFarlan whose remains were brought from Georgia Monday night. He was sick only a short time having fever.

Also on the same page:

Arch A. McFarlan, son of J. A. McFarlan, died of typhoid or malarial fever August 9th 1889, at Atlanta, Georgia at the age of 27 years. For five years he ran on the Northwestern west of Boone, and for the past two years has been conductor on a railroad running out of Atlanta. His sickness was of nearly three weeks duration. His brother, Neil, reached his bedside three days before his death. His body was brought home at Gilbert where his funeral was attended, Tuesday, a large delegation of the associations to which he belonged, testifying by their presence the high estimation in which he was held. He was a worthy young man, and his early death brings sorrow to his own family circle and to many hearts outside.

*SUBMITTER'S NOTE: "Mrs. W. H. Nelson" was Sarah Elizabeth McFarlan, wife of William H. Nelson. Sarah Elizabeth McFarlan and Arch A. McFarlan were the children of John Alexander McFarlan and Jane Neilson Hannay.
