Obituary From Adams Soderstrum Funeral Home, Story County, Iowa.

Rita Ann Dobson Baumel was born on August 27, 1929 to Joseph and Rosemary (Brockmeyer) Dobson in Columbus, Ohio. She graduated from St. Mary of the Springs Academy in 1947 where she was the salutatorian, and received a Bachelor of Science degree in Dietetics from The Ohio State University in 1950. She completed a three-year internship and was a Dietitian at Ross Laboratories and Nationwide Insurance Company in Columbus and Mary Greeley Medical Center, the Doran Clinic for Women and the Family Practice Medical Clinic in Ames.

She was married on June 2, 1951 to C. Phillip Baumel in Columbus, Ohio. After living in Orlando, Florida while her husband was in the U.S. Air Force, they settled in Ames where her husband was on the faculty at Iowa State University. They traveled together extensively; her favorite destination was Lima, Peru, where they lived for two years, and where their youngest daughter was born. After returning from Peru, Rita started the organization “Friends of the Foreign Wives.” The purpose of this group was to help wives of foreign graduate students adjust to life in Ames. An outgrowth of this was an organization, which paired an Ames woman with a foreign wife to study the English language.

She was a member of St. Thomas Aquinas Church in Ames and Our Lady of Lourdes Church in Sun City West, The American Dietetic Association, the Council of Consulting Nutritionists, Alpha Chi Omega Alumnae, Catholic Daughters of the Americas, Chapter KC P.E.O, Mary Greeley Medical Center Auxiliary and the I.S.U. Women’s Club.

Rita died on October 2, 2015 at Banner Del Webb Medical Center, Sun City West, Arizona.

Rita is survived by her husband of 64 years, C. Phillip Baumel, Ph.D., of Ames, Iowa; five children, Stephen (Helen) Baumel of Council Bluffs, IA, Mary (Dan) Divis of Pickerel, NE, Elizabeth (Bruce) Ring of Jefferson City, MO, Mark (Amy Patrick, M.D.) Baumel, M.D. of Kennett Square, PA and Margaret (Kevin) Stephens of Carlsbad, CA; five grandchildren, Marie Baumel, Julia Baumel, Jonathan Baumel, Olivia Stephens and Luke Stephens; one sister, Rosemary Leake, M.D. of Rolling Hills, CA; and many cousins.

She was preceded in death by her parents.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests a donation to Birthright of Ames, 108 Hayward Ave., Suite 202, Ames, Iowa 50014, or Youth and Shelter Services, 420 Kellogg Ave., Ames, Iowa 50010.
