Herman L. Kennedy was born on March 1, 1938 to Howard and Gladys (Peterson) Kennedy in Kelley, Iowa. Herman married Barbara Hanson in 1970. He worked in maintenance at the Iowa State University Power Plant for 35 years. Herman was a lifetime resident of Kelley and a member of the Bethany Lutheran Church. After retiring from Iowa State, Herman worked at Hokel Machine Supply in Ames. He enjoyed being outside flowering and gardening, having his coffee at the Kelley Historical Society Building or at Hy-Vee in Ames, and being around kids and dogs - they always made him smile. Herman loved his family very much.

Herman passed away at 77 years of age on September 28, 2015 at Mercy Medical Center in Des Moines.

Herman is survived by his wife, Barbara Kennedy of Kelley; his children, Terry (Jody) Terrones of Kelley, Debra Terrones of Des Moines and Rick (Susan) Terrones of Huxley; six grandchildren, Chantel (Kyle) Brown, Tonya (Joe) Mesner, Ryan (Natalie) Terrones, Christian (Tori) Terrones, Danielle Terrones and Wyatt Terrones; nine great-grandchildren; his brothers, Marvin (Toots) Kennedy of Kelley and John Kennedy of Ames; and his sister, Doris Stark of Kelley.

He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, Don Kennedy, Lawrence Kennedy, Richard Kennedy; and his sister, Ruth Montague.
