Richard Lee "Dick" Holmes age 85, of Ames, Iowa died at Israel Family Hospice House in Ames on September 5, 2015. A gathering of friends and family visitation will be 2 - 4:00 p.m. Sunday, September 13, with a 10:30 a.m. Monday, September 14, celebration of life memorial service at Grandon Funeral and Cremation Care 414 Lincoln Way in Ames. Inurnment with military honors will follow at Ames Municipal Cemetery.

Dick was born June 19, 1930 the son of Gilbert Clair and Mary Genevieve Davis Holmes in Crawfordsville, Iowa. After graduation from Crawfordsville High School, Dick went on to Washington Jr. College, where he played basketball and caught the eye of Marsha Ann Bailey. They were married in grand style on August 29, 1952 in the gardens of her grandfather Marsh Bailey estate Washington, Iowa.

Dick and Marsha farmed for 13 years west of Crawfordsville, and was blessed with two children, Sharon Jean and Michael Lee. Dick then went to work for Rath Packing in the warehouse for two years before moving to Ames in 1966. There he appraised real estate for 29 years for Iowa Department of Transportation before retiring in 1995. As a hunting and fishing enthusiast, Dick was a member of NRA, associated sporting clubs, and relished trips to Minnesota lakes.

Dick was a 50 year member of the Masonic Lodge, YorkRite, ZaGaZig Shrine. A 22 year veteran of the Iowa National Guard, 34th Infantry Division. He continued this service as the association's National President. Other memberships include American Legion and Collegiate Presbyterian Church.

Dick is survived by his wife, Marsha of Ames, daughter, Sharon (Dan) Spencer of Lenexa, KS; son, Michael Holmes of Parker, CO; grandchildren, Max and Halle Holmes and Chad Spencer and great grandchildren Lucas and Amelia Spencer; brother, Roger (Betty) Holmes of Paradise, CA and a sister, Marcia (Dan) Wiedemeier of Burlington, IA.

Dick was preceded in death by his parents and a grandson Ryan Spencer.

In lieu of flowers memorials may be directed to Shrine Children's Hospital.
