Ames man hit, killed by truck

Tennis August Larson, 76, 907 Park Ave., was fatally injured last night when he was struck by a pickup truck on U. S. 69 about two miles south of Ames. The driver of the truck was David Murrow, 28, Murray. Dale --ker, 21, Ames, a passenger in the truck sustained facial lacerations.

Funeral Services

Born on farm near Cambridge, he came to Ames 12 years ago. He had farmed near Slater for a number of years.

Survivors include his wife, Mabel; two daughters, Mrs. Mary Jean Anderson of Des Moines and Mrs. Rose Carol Tyler of Glenview, Ill.; a son, Tennis of Slater; a brother, Albert, Cambridge; three sisters, Mrs. Ella Engen of Slater, Mrs. Sylvia Anderson of Cambridge and Mrs. Hilda Ekrem of Brainerd, Minn.; and nine grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held Saturday at 1:30 p.m. from the Evangelical United Brethren Church with the Rev. E. E. Peters officiating. Burial is to be in Ames Municipal Cemetery. Friends may call at Stevens Memorial Chapel Friday afternoon and evening.

Car Stalled

According to investigating officers, Mr. Larson's car had stalled as he was proceeding ---th on U. S. 69. He stopped the car along the shoulder of the road and had gone to the Ames Nursery to telephone for assistance. It was as he was returning to the car that he was struck by the southbound truck.

The medical examiner's report listed a broken neck as the cause of death. Mr. Larson also sustained broken legs and multiple injuries, the report said.

Murrow told officers he attempted to stop but could not avoid Mr. Larson, who was in the traffic lane. As the truck slowed, it was hit in the rear by a car driven by Ronald Gary --ickler, 28, also southbound. Both vehicles stopped at the scene.

The highway patrol report estimated damage to each of the vehicles at $200.

The accident occurred about --:30 p.m. Witnesses said Mr. Larson was wearing dark clothes.
