Slater Couple Killed in Car Accident on Friday

The Slater community was shocked and saddened when word spread of the tragic accident in which Mr. and Mrs. Andre Estem, long-time Slater residents, were instantly killed on Friday afternoon.

They were coming home from Madrid during a blinding snowfall and collided near Big Creek bridge with a car in the westbound lane driven by Mrs. Vernon Foster, also of Slater, who was on her way to Madrid.

Mrs. Foster escaped with relatively minor injuries, receiving head cuts and an injured knee.

Both ears were badly damaged.

Double Funeral Services

Double funeral services were held Monday afternoon at 2 o'clock at the Bethlehem Lutheran Church for Mr. and Mrs. Andrew Estrem, who passed away at the scene of the accident west of Slater, Friday, Jan. 17, 1969.

The services were in charge of their pastor, Rev. W. A. Adix. His sermon theme was "Victories of Grace," based on 1 Corinthians 15:57 for the text.

Robert Weeks was the soloist. He sang a favorite Norwegian hyumn, "Den Store Hvide Flok Vi Se," and its translation into English under the title, "Behold the Host," before the sermon. Another favorite, "How Great Thou Art," was his selection at the close of the service. Mrs. Oliver Newman served as organist and accompanied Mr. Weeks.

A group of Mr. Estrem's nephews served as pallbearers for him. They were Casper Estrem, LeRoy Estrem, Charles Estrem, Herbert Ritland, Leonard Van Scoy and Alvin Esrtem.

Pallbearers for Mrs. Estrem were some of her nephews and included John Behling, Carroll Tweedt, Ervin Tweedt, John Sheldahl, Dal Sheldahl and Milton Sheldahl.

Eintement was in the Bethlehem Cemetery at Slater.

Obituary of Mr. Estem

Andrew Estem, son of Thomas and Louise Estem, was born Feb. 5, 1888 in Sheldahl and passed away Jan. 17, 1969.

He was united in marriage to Clara Sheldahl on Oct. 7, 1914 at her home in Slater by Rev. H. J. Holman.

He was very active in church, always willing to help in any way he could, and his services will be missed.

Surviving him are five brothers and five sisters. The brothers are Nels of Salem, Ore., Ingwal and Bert of Slater, Howard of Ames, and Arthur of Madrid. His sisters are Mrs. R. J. (Tillie) Largent of Fort Dodge, Mrs. Hilda Van Scoy of Ames, Mrs. Oley (Hattie) Houge of Slater, Mrs. Cedric (Beatrice) Anderson and Mrs. Mabel Trumbull of Sheldahl. He is also survived by a large number of nephews, nieces and friends All of the brothers and sisters, except Nels and Mrs. Van Scoy, were able to attend the services.

He was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters and one brother.

Obituary for Mrs. Estrem

Clara Estrem, daughter of Erick O. and Julia Sheldahl, was born Mar. 7, 1890, near Slater, and passed away Jan. 17, 1969.

On Oct. 7, 1914 she was united in marriage to Andrew Estrem. they made their home in Slater through the years and in 1964 they wer privileged to celebrate their golden wedding anniversary.

Mrs. Estrem is survived by one brother, Andrew Sheldahl, and a large number of nieces and nephews.

Preceding her in death were her parents, three sisters and two brothers.

Her greatest interests were her home and church activities, especially the activities of the women of the church. She was a sincere Christian woman, always interested in and concerned about her many relatives and friends.
