Sherman Thompson born to Richard and Anna Marie Thompson on October 17, 1923. Sherman attended Alleman High School in Alleman, Iowa. After graduation in 1943, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy, serving in the Pacific Theatre on the U.S.S. 229 Rockingham. He met the love of his life, Mildred Marie Petersen, and they were married on September 8, 1953.

Sherman and Millie raised five children on the farm just one mile north of Alleman until their retirement in 1993. Sherman was a skilled farmer, raising grain crops and livestock during his lengthy career. He was proud of his Norwegian-American heritage and passed his sense of identity on down to his family. He enjoyed gardening and spending time with family and friends. Gifted with a sense of humor and an art for conversation, Sherman engaged people and shared his wonderful personality with everyone he met. He was a member of the Slater American Legion and Fjeldberg Lutheran Church where he served as a Council Trustee.

Sherman Donald Thompson, 91, of Slater passed away Sunday, July 19, 2015 at the Israel Family Hospice House in Ames, Iowa.

We are grateful for the gifts Sherman has shared with us throughout his life. He was a loving husband, grandfather and great-grandfather. Left to cherish his memory is his loving family which includes: sons, Donald of Cedar Rapids, Dennis (Carol) of Boone; daughters, Katie (Marty) Ball of Tarpon Springs, FL, Susan (Scott) Ramfjord of Ankeny; grandchildren, Matthew (Jeni) Thompson of Ottumwa, Anne (Chris) Chapman of Janesville, WI and Miles Ramfjord of Ankeny; great-grandchildren, Luke, Grant, Mazie, Alli and Hayden.

Sherman will be reunited in heaven with his wife Millie and son, Richard, who preceded him in death in 1969.

The family would like to thank his doctors and caregivers, the Israel Family Hospice house, family and friends for their thoughts , prayers and care of Sherman over these past weeks.

Memorials may be designated for the Fjeldberg Lutheran Church, the Israel Family Hospice House or the Iowa State Fair Blue Ribbon foundation in Sherman’s name.
