Obituary from Oakcrest Funeral Services, Algona, Kossuth County, Iowa:
Barbara was born in Story City, Iowa on Christmas Day 1928 to Arnie and Marie Travase. She grew up in Story City and worked as a bookkeeper after high school graduation.
On August 11, 1950, she married Robert Fortney at the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Story City. They farmed near Bancroft, Iowa for 33 years before moving to Lone Rock in 1983. She was a beloved wife and mother. Barbara and Bob raised their three daughters with humor, kindness, and quiet strength. They were a wonderful example for their daughters.
At the farm, she tended a big garden filled with vegetables and strawberries and raspberries. She also had beautiful flower gardens. She was an excellent cook and baker - known for her sour cream raisin pies and Norwegian pastries. She was also highly regarded for her sewing talents.
Barbara loved to square dance with Bob. She was an active member of the Lone Rock Presbyterian Church. A former leader of the Seneca Stars 4-H Club. She was a good friend to all.
Barbara loved to watch beautiful sunsets. But her greatest joy came from being with family. She truly enjoyed spoiling her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
