John Edward Bomberger was born September 28, 1938 to John Hol and Mattie (Solyst) Bomberger in Des Moines. Ed graduated from Ames High School in 1957 and married Carolyn Joy Eslinger on July 3, 1965, at First Presbyterian Church in Clinton. He received a Bachelor of Arts degree in History from Simpson College and worked as Director of Information at Eastern Iowa Light and Power.

As part of the Ames High Track Team, Ed was a member of the 1957 Mile Relay team that ran 3:21.30, an AHS record, best in Iowa history, and equaled the fastest time in the U.S. that year.

In 1974, Ed won an ADDY Award for his work with the Rural Electric Cooperative (REC) for Consumer Services in Radio. He was able to combine his skills in journalism, photography, and business later in his career while doing industrial development work in the Eastern Iowa area.

Outside of work, Ed enjoyed spending time with his family, gardening, photography, fishing, and golf. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge in Wilton.

Ed passed away at 76 years of age on January 29, 2015, at Story County Medical Center in Nevada.

Ed is survived by his wife, Carolyn Bomberger, of Ames; three daughters, Betsy (Kurt) Peterson, of Ames, Julie (Rich) Russo of Bexley, Ohio and Lisa (Jeff) Brinkley, of Ames; four grandchildren, Renata Russo, Alyssa Russo, Eli Brinkley and Abi Brinkley; and one brother, Bill Bomberger.

He was preceded in death by his parents and one sister, Betty Jane Richards.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to Mary Greeley Home Health Services or the Story County Medical Center.
