Obituary From Adams Soderstrum Funeral Home, Story County, Iowa.
Edwin Lee Fawkes, 64, of Ames, died unexpectedly on Thursday, November 27, 2014. Visitation will be held on Monday, December 1st from 5 to 7 with a vigil service at 7 pm. A Mass of Christian Burial will be on Tuesday, December 2nd at 10:30 am. All services will be held at St. Cecilia Catholic Church in Ames. Burial will be at Ames Municipal Cemetery.
Ed was born July 22, 1950 in Ft. Dodge, IA to Marion and Gail (Hill) Fawkes. He graduated from Ames High School in 1968 and attended Ellsworth Community College. Ed married Mary Susan Lee on November 6, 1976 at St. Cecilia Catholic Church in Ames. He was employed at the Iowa Department of Transportation for 33 years, retiring in 2005.
Ed was very involved at St. Cecilia Catholic Church as a Eucharistic Minister, head usher, and sacristan for bereavement ministry. He served as President of the Parish Council for several years and was a 3rd degree member of Knights of Columbus.He was the current president of the Ames Ecumenical Housing Board. He served 3 years on their Board of Directors. This non-profit organization is sponsored by 15 Ames churches including St. Cecilia’s and three community organizations. They provide housing for low income residents at Stone Haven and Keystone apartments.
He was a 40 year member of the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks, Ames Lodge 1626. He served as the Exalted Ruler in 1983.
Ed was an avid golfer and a member of Ballard Golf and Country Club and enjoyed playing in many leagues. He was a big supporter of ISU athletics and one of his proudest moments was when he shot a hole in one during a Cyclone fundraiser.
One of Ed's most recent interests was writing poetry. He was a member of the Third Stanza Poet's Group and some of his poems have been published.
Ed was proudly registered with the Iowa Donor Network. His family respectfully honored his wishes.
Ed is survived by his wife, Mary; mother, Gail; brother, Jeff (Beth); sister, Sandi (Bryan) Charter; nephews, Austin (Lindsay) Fawkes, Christopher Fawkes, Taylor Charter, Kyle Charter; and great nephew, Jeffrey Fawkes all of Ames.
He was preceded in death by his father Marion; and brother-in-law, Robert Lee.
