Obituary from Iles Funeral Homes, Des Moines, Iowa:

Dorothy Jean Maitland Miller, 84, of Urbandale began her next journey peacefully on November 20, 2014 surrounded by loved ones. Her loving heart and strong will were with us all throughout her fight.

She was born August 16, 1930 to Andrew and Jessie Maitland in Ames, Iowa. She graduated from Ames High School then Iowa State University, where she majored in Applied Arts.

Her first job took her to Hallmark Cards in Kansas City, MO as an artist. After two years, she returned to Des Moines to join the Meredith Corporation as a graphic artist for Better Homes and Gardens. She retired in 1973 after nearly 20 years.

She married Robert H. Miller, Jr. on May 20, 1970 and immediately became a mother and a grandmother. She had cherished those roles to this day.

She was a member of the ISU Alumni Club, Order of the Knoll, and the Alpha Gamma Delta Sorority.

She was a founding member of the Art Director's Association of Iowa and the first female member. She was also a member of St. John's Lutheran Church in Des Moines.

She was preceded into eternal life by her beloved husband, Bob; her parents, and her brother, Robert Maitland. She is survived by daughter, Cris Ann Krull of West Des Moines; son, Robert B. Miller (Kim), formerly of Des Moines, now of Lakeville, MN; eight grandchildren and six great grandchildren.

Her family would like to express our love and appreciation to the Doctors, nurses, aides and care providers at UnityPoint Methodist Hospital, UnityPoint Hospice Care and especially Scottish Rite Park Care Center; and to the two family friends who have helped Dorothy so much through this journey.

In lieu of flowers, the family request memorials be sent in her name to the Iowa State University Dorothy Maitland Miller Scholarship Fund or the American Cancer Society.

Funeral services will be held at Iles Westover Chapel, 6337 Hickman Road in Des Moines at 10:00 a.m., Saturday, November 22, 2014. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the funeral home. Burial will be at Resthaven Cemetery. Online condolences are welcome at www.IlesCares.com.
