Elia Grace Bergling was born February 23, 1923 in Buena Vista County, Iowa to Elmer and Anna (Dahlberg) Bergling. Eila grew up in Northwest Iowa, (Marathon) until the family moved to Boone, Iowa in 1937.

Eila graduated from Boone High School in Boone, Iowa in 1940, after which she attended Trinity Bible College in Chicago, IL for one school year, where she met Herschel Smith, a fellow student, later to be her husband. Herschel and Eila were married on March 16, 1944 in Boone when Herschel had a one week leave from the army prior to leaving for the European Theatre of Operations.

Eila was a homemaker for most of her life, and loved spending time with her family. Eila enjoyed sewing for many years and she enjoyed entering contests in which she would have to write 25 words or less, compose a jingle or, as in the Dean's Milk contest in which she won first prize, she had to name the iconic Dean's bluebird on the mailbox. She won many, many prizes over the years. Eila was a loyal Evangelical Free Church attendant throughout her life.

Elmer and Anna Bergling had four children: Herschel Bergling, June Sundblad, Eila Smith, and Alice Fardall. Of these, only Alice Fardall survives. Eila had two children: Ronald, age 68 and Douglas, age 65, and 5 grandchildren: Laura age 35, Julie age 35, Becky age 30, Paul age 29, and Justin age 26.

Memorial Contributions may be directed to the Christ Community Church, 5501 George Washington Carver Ave., Ames, Iowa 50010.
