Charles Henry Hapes
Dec. 21, 1913 to Feb. 25, 2000

Charles Henry Hapes, 86, of Nevada, died of a heart ailment Friday, Feb. 25, at the Rolling Green Village Care Center.

He was born Dec. 21, 1913, in Chula, Mo., to Harry and Bessie (Fleshman) Hapes. He married Dorothy Earwicker on Sept. 25, 1937, in Tama. He had worked as a farmhand and then worked at Nevada Locker Plant. He later became the Route Man for Nevada Cleaners for many years. He also worked for Pinkerton Security, as well as being the evening custodian at State Bank & Trust for 26 years. He was a member of the Nevada United Methodist Church. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, crossword puzzles and craft work. He is known for his sequin calendars.

Survivors include his wife, Dorothy, of Nevada; a son, Charles Hapes Jr. (and Emma) of Denver, Colo.; three daughters, Norma (and Dan) Schoppe of Marshalltown, Betty Shafer of New Haven, Mich., and Karen (and Edward) Anderson of Nevada, six grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; a brother Virgil Hapes of Plano, Texas; and two sisters, Ann Otto of Marshalltown and Cathryn Eternicka of Crandon, Wis.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a granddaughter; a brother, Bill Hapes; a sister, Louise Carpenter; and a son-in-law, Robert Shafer.

Funeral services were held Tuesday, Feb. 29, at Nevada United Methodist Church with the Rev. Steve Williams officiating. Burial was in the Nevada Cemetery. Memorials may be made to Rolling Green Village. The Bacon Funeral Home, Nevada, handled arrangements.
