Obituary From Adams Soderstrum Funeral Home, Story County, Iowa.

Bernice Mildred (Durby) Caltvedt passed away on July 3, 2014 at Bethany Manor in Story City at the age of 100 years. Visitation will be Friday, July 11, from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Bethany Manor Chapel. Funeral Service will be held 10:30 a.m., Saturday, July 12, at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Story City.

Bernice was born on August 5, 1913 to Peder and Maren (Bjornevik) Durby, immigrants from Norway, on a farm southwest of Roland. She was baptized and confirmed at Bergen Lutheran Church in Roland. Bernice attended Milford Township schools. In 1931 she married Martin Theodore Caltvedt at her parents’ farm home. During their marriage they lived on three different farms in Warren Township. After Martin’s sudden death in 1964, she continued to live on the family farm and became known for baking Norwegian kringla, which she sold locally. In 1977 she moved to an apartment in Story City. Later she moved to Timberland and then to Bethany Manor.

Bernice was a family-centered person and a person of strong faith. She was active in Bethany Lutheran Church in McCallsburg and Immanuel Lutheran Church in Story City.

Bernice is survived by three daughters, Betty Page (the late Neal), Virgetta Johnson-Smith (Carl Smith), and Elaine (Michael) Hanson; two sons, Ernest (the late Eloise) and Lester (Sarah), 13 grandchildren, and 17 great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, six sisters, Emma Olson, Lydia Sansgaard, Stella Nassen, Myrtle Durby, Ruth Duea and Palma Beaty and seven brothers, Palmer, Lesly, Archie, Enoch, Laurence, Joseph, and Benjamin.

A memorial has been established in her name for the Eloise Community Center to be built by China Service Ventures in Henan, China and Timberland Village in Story City.
