Viola Avonell Strum
June 9, 1922 to July 3, 1998

Viola Avonell Strum, 76, of Nevada, died Friday, July 3, of a liver and blood disorder at Mary Greeley Medical Center in Ames.

She was born June 9, 1922, to Peter and Sadie (Osmundson) Johnson near Radcliffe. She was baptized and confirmed in the Zion Lutheran Church near Garden City. She attended Radcliffe school and was a 1939 graduate of McCallsburg High School.

She married Wendell C. Strum on June 28, 1939, in Story City, and they lived in Roland and McCallsburg from 1939-1952, when they moved to Nevada. She was employed by R.H. Donnelley Marketing and retired as a technician from the National Animal Disease Lab in 1987 after 20 years of service. She was a member of Memorial Lutheran Church and the Martha Circle. She enjoyed crafts and arts, gardening, all church activities, volunteer work and was an excellent kringla maker. She and Wendell renewed their marriage vows on their 50th anniversary with all their children present and Pastor Daniel Solomon officiating.

Survivors include three sons, Wendell V. "Bud" (and Dolores), Stanley N. (and Kathy) and Paul S. (and Paula), all of Nevada; three daughters, Glenda G. Wise (and Joe) of Prior Lake, Minn., Wanda J. Valline (and Mike) of Phoenix, Ariz., and Sue A. Young (and John) of Peoria, Ariz.; 20 grandchildren; three sisters, Vivian Olson and Phyllis Buhl, both of Nevada, and Blanche Nessa (and Milford) of Garden City; one brother, Richard Johnson (and Phyllis) of Story City; and a sister-in-law, Naomi Johnson of Radcliffe.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Wendell, on Dec. 10, 1995; a daughter, Rebecca Sue in 1952; two brothers; and a sister.

Funeral services were held Monday, July 6, at Memorial Lutheran Church in Nevada with Pastor Myron Herzberg officiating. Burial followed at the Nevada Municipal Cemetery. A memorial fund has been established. Chet Ryan Mortuary, Nevada, handled arrangements.
