Wendell Curtis Strum
Nov. 9, 1916 to Dec. 10, 1995Wendell Craig Strum, 79, of Nevada died of congestive heart failure at Rolling Green Village on Sunday, Dec. 10.
He was born to Silas and Nettie (Wicks) Strum on a farm near Roland on Nov. 9, 1916. A lifelong resident of Story County, he was baptized and confirmed in the Salem Lutheran Church in Roland. He was a 1936 graduate of McCallsburg High School.
On June 28, 1939, he married Viola A. Johnson in Story City; and in 1989, the couple renewed their vows on their 50th wedding anniversary.
He served as a corporal in the U.S. Army World War II. He worked as a custodian for Iowa State University for 10 years. He retired in 1971. He was a member of the William F. Ball American Legion Post #48 and Memorial Lutheran Church.
Survivors include his wife, Viola, of Nevada; three sons and their wives, Wendell (Bud) and Delores, Stanley and Kathy, and Paul and Paula, all of Nevada; three daughters and their husbands, Glenda G. Wise and Joe of Prior Lake, Minn., Wanda J. Valline and Michael of Phoenix, Ariz., and Sue A. Young and John of Peoria, Ariz.; 20 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren; one brother, Virgil Strum of Ellsworth; and two sisters-in-law, Dorothy and Betty Strum, both of Roland.
He was preceded in death by his parents; an infant daughter, Rebecca Sue in 1952; and two brothers, Robert and Richard Strum, both of Roland.
Funeral services will be held Thursday, Dec. 14, at 2 p.m. at the Memorial Lutheran Church with Pastor Forrest E. Chaffee officiating. Military graveside rites will be conducted by the William F. Ball American Legion Post #48 at Nevada Municipal Cemetery. A memorial fund has been established, Chet Ryan Mortuary handled arrangements.
