Charles P. Hartman Dies Last Evening; Funeral on Sunday

Charles P. Hartman,63, longtime resident of Nevada, died Friday night [March 17, 1939] after an illness covering over a period of several weeks.

Funeral services will be held Sunday afternoon at 2:30 at the Morfoot Funeral home, with Dr. C. D. Loose of the Methodist Episcopal church. Burial will be in the Nevada cemetery by the side of his late wife, Bertha Vinje-Hartman, who died in January 1925.

Born in Illinois, September 25, 1878, he came to Iowa as a boy with his family and was raised up in the neighborhood of Lake View City, Sac county.

Later he studied pharmacy was admitted by the board and came to Nevada first in the fall of 1902, when he entered the then W. E. Nichols store as a pharmacist.

Continuing there for some time he finally associated himself with A. W. Banks in about 1905 in the purchase and operation of the Drybread store in th Briggs block, which they operated for a number of years. After the withdrawal of Mr. Banks for he was associate with Mr. Drybread for a short time.

In the meantime he had been married April 15, 1908 with Miss Bertha Vinge. Three children were born to them and all survive the parents. They are Mrs. Barbara Christy and Charles and John Hartman.

Besides the three children, Mr. Hartman leaves three sisters, they being Mrs. E. J. Shea of Oakland, California, Mrs. Frank Caveny of Chicago and Mrs. J. P. Laughlin of Des Moines.

After retiring from the business here Mr. Hartman and family moved to near Sac county in 1914 where they were on a farm for a few years. Leaving the farm they returned to Nevada where Mrs. Hartman died about 14 years ago.

Following the death of the wife he clerked at various places until his health and eyesight began to fail him and he was forced to quit work.

Charles P. "Barney" Hartman was a man who during his active days had a wide acquaintance and a large circle of friends in Story county.

Capable and courteous in his treatment of the public and of pleasing personality and kindly and charitable in his everyday life, he was a man who drew and kept friends.

He had been a member of the Masonic and Pythian lodges during his earlier period of residence in Nevada.
