From unknown newspaper 1927
Business paused in Nevada for an hour this afternoon, while neighbors and friends, augmented by many from other parts of the county and state, gathered with the members of the family of Charles P. McCord, to pay a final earthly tribute to his memory.
The funeral services were held on the lawn at the home of East Lincoln avenue and the gathering was one of the largest that has ever congregated at a funeral in Nevada.
The service was in charge of Rev. J. O. Leitch, former pastor Central Presbyterian church of this city but now of Sioux City.
The pall bearers were Jay K. Banks, O. J. Benjamin, Jos. M. Bricker, E. A. Chapman, W. W. Finnie, Fred T. Mills, Bernice M. Soper and Paul Welty.
Tennyson's "Crossing the Bar" was sung by Frank O. Ingalls and Mrs. W. W. Shaffer and Mrs. Shaffer sang a solo.
The floral offerings were many and most beautiful, there being a number of elaborate set pieces. In fact the entire setting well fitted the final tribute that Mr. McCord sell deserved.
Interment was at the Nevada cemetery and was under the ritualistic ceremonies of the Knights of Pythias lodge, of which he was a member since 1896, or thirty-one years.
The business houses of the city, the postoffice and the court house were closed during the hours of the funeral service, from 2:45 until 4:00.
Mr. McCord, who had served as postmaster for nearly six years, had so long been in public life in the county and been so closely identified with public affairs that the sudden death, following a paralytic stroke in Des Moines Tuesday afternoon, came as a great shock to the entire community and there were people here from all corners of the county, as well as many from Des Moines and other points.
Charles Perry McCord was born in South New Albany township, the youngest son of Commodore Perry and Sarah E. Smith-McCord, March 21, 1870. He lived on the farm with his parents until a lad of about nine years, when the family moved to Nevada and he attended the public schools and was raised to young manhood.
he was united in marriage to Miss Viola Dillin, daughter of James and Sarah Dillin, December 31, 1894 and to them five children were born. The first baby boy died in infancy. The others are Velda, now Mrs. Wright Ringheim of this city, Mable now Mrs. Lloyd C. Kinsey of Warrenton, N. C., Frederick, now a law student at the State University of Iowa and Miss Lois, now employed at the Iowa Highway Commission at Ames.
The family home has been in Nevada continuously, with the exception of a short time spent on one of their farm north of this city.
Mr. McCord served as deputy sheriff under O. G. Ashford, was later deputy clerk of district court under Chas. M. Soper, then was elected Clerk of District Court and served four years, was engaged in the mercantile business in Nevada for a few years and was appointed postmaster of Nevada by President Harding and had served since December 1, 1921, having received his second appointment under President Coolidge.
He had always been active in public life and had taken an ardent interest in political affairs, having been aligned with the Republican party and had served his party as both county and district commitment at various times.
He was a man of tine personality, was a recognized factor in the community in which he had spent his lifetime and his sudden passing came not only as a shock to the family, the friends and neighbors, but will be a distinct loss to the entire community in which his life had been so closely associated. He was a man admired and respected for his many sterling qualities and his friends were numbered by his acquaintances.
He leaves besides his wife, one son and three daughters, three brothers and one sister, besides other relatives. The brothers are Jacob W. McCord of Collins, Sherman G. McCord of Lawton, Oklahoma and Dr. Elias S. McCord of Delmar, while the sister is Mrs. Edith Shenkle of Collins township.
