Violet Clare Chitty
March 13, 1894 to July 11, 1996Violet Clare Chitty, 102, of Nevada, died of heart failure at Rollng Green Care Center on July 11.
She was born on March 13, 1894, in Vail to Alfred and Lillie Tempest. Her young life was spent at Vail and she graduated from Vail High School in 1913. She attended the University of Northern Iowa and taught four years in the Crawford County schools. In 1925, she was elected to the faculty of the Fernald School and was an elementary teacher there until 1937.
On March 12, 1937, she married Ray E. Chitty. She was in charge of the Fernald Post Office for a number of years. In 1970, the Chittys retired and moved to Nevada.
She was a member of the United Methodist Church in Nevada and a member of the Nevada Chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star.
Survivors include her children, the Rev. Donald Chapman of Pine River, Minn.; Beulah Miller of Bishop, Calif., and Leila Thielking of Des Moines; a step-son, Rodger French of Nevada; seven grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren and six great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded n death by her parents, her husband in 1980, one grandson and one great-granddaughter.
Services were held July 16 at the United Methodist Church in Nevada. Hamilton's Funeral Home handled arrangements.
