Jesse A. Cook, son of John Wesley and Rebecca Jackson Cook, was born on the home farm northeast of Nevada, Dec. 11, 1877, and passed away at his home 1037 Seventh street, Nevada, Thursday morning, Oct.13, at the age of 71 years, 10 months and 2 days.
Jesse received his education in the rural schools of Story county and in the Nevada public school. He was converted in early manhood in the family church at Johnsons Grove. he attended Simpson college with intention of entering the ministry, however he had to give up all his college career on account of ill health.
Married in 1900
he was united in marriage on Sept 20, 1900 to Annie Shammo. To this union was born three sons, Merrill, Iver and Willard. They farmed the home place until his health broke in 1928 when they moved to Nevada which has since been their home.
Jesse was a conscientious Christian gentleman. he was a member of the Nevada Methodist church for more than 50 years. He was faithful in attendance, taking an active part in church activities. He sang in the choir and taught a Sunday school class for a number of years and always carried his share of duties and responsibilities.
He was kind and loving, a gentle and gracious father and husband. he loved his home and his hobby was his church, his home and his family. He was very patient, never strong or robust and for the past seven years has shown his affection in the care of his semi-invalid companion.
Survivors
He is survived by his wife, Annie, three sons, Dr. Jesse Merrill Cook, of Pella, Iver S. Cook of Nevada and J. Willard Cook of Ogden, Utah, one brother Dr. O. I. Cook of Des Moines, and four sisters, Mrs. Della Coughenour of Nevada, Mrs. Anna French of Fernald, Mrs. Peal Swank of Des Moines and Mrs. J. Neal Clemmer of Luther. Three grandchildren survive, Jack and Judy Cook of Pella and Willard Cook of Nevada, together with many other relatives and friends.
