MRS. EMMA AKIN TAKEN BY DEATH
Ill Only Few Hours; Funeral Thurs.
Mrs. Emma Zumwalt Akin, 82, died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Lynn R. Morris, 617 Duff avenue, at 6 p.m., Monday, following a one-day's illness. Her death was attributed to a sudden collapse due to old age. She would have been 83 years old March 27.
Funeral services will be held Thursday at 2:30 p. m. from the Adams chapel. The Rev. Jack Finegan, pastor of the church of Christ will officiate. Burial will be in the Ames cemetery beside her husband, George W. Akin, who died in the same room in which Mrs. Akin died, 22 years ago.
Mrs. Akin was born at Delevan, Ill., March 27, 1852. She was married at Emden, Ill., in 1872, and shortly after the couple moved to Ames. Mr. Akin was a farmer.
Prominent in Church
During her life here, Mrs. Akin was prominent in the Church of Christ, in both Ladies Aid society work and in the Sunday school. She also had been active in the Women's Relief corps, but had retired from that work in later years because of advanced age. She had been in normal health recently, her fatal illness coming on her only a few hours before her death.
She is survived by seven children, John H. Akin, Ray Akin, Mrs. Minos (Grace) Fall, Mrs. Charles E. (Bernice) Dragoun and Mrs. Lynn R. (Bertha) Morris, all of Ames; Lee Akin of Washington, D. C., and Mrs. Ann Jonker of Three Rivers, Mich. She also leaves a sister, Mrs. E. O. Morris of Long Beach, Cal., and a brother, James Zumwalt, of Emden, Ill.
Her son Lee is expected to reach Ames Thursday in time for the funeral. Mrs. Jonker arrived here about 10 days ago, following a tour to Florida, and was with Mrs. Akin at the time of her death, together with the other children residing in Ames.
