Funeral services for O. J. Benjamin, senior publisher of the Nevada Evening Journal, were held Monday afternoon at 2:30 form the Ryan Funeral Home with Harry C. Ogden, pastor of the Johnsons Grove Methodist church, officiating.
The casket was surrounded by many beautiful flowers arranged by Mrs. Myrtle Albery, Mrs. Adelaide Smedal and Mrs. C. A. Ryan.
Mr. Norman C. Dobson was at the organ playing appropriate selections which included "Meditation" (Morrison), "Nearer My God to Thee" and "Crossing the Bar."
The casket bearers were members of the Nevada Evening Journal staff: P. R. Halleland, Wm. Haugsted, Gerald Beckley, Leo Baker, Max Hansen and Lester Hansen.
Newspaper men in attendance at the last rites were P. A. Olson of Story City, publisher of the Story City Herald, and Wm. S. Rupe, publisher of the Ames Tribune. Many messages were received from newspaper men over the state of Iowa with whom Mr. Benjamin had been associated for many years.
Among others here for the last rites were his niece and her husband, Mr. and Mrs. Lawrence Smith of Sioux City, Mr. and Mrs. Donald Smith of Omaha, Neb., Rev. Ivar Havneros of Story City, Mrs. Ingwald Madsen of Zearing, Mr. and Mrs. Lew Elliott of Ames, Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth Clark of Des Moines, Mr. and Mrs. John Croker of Colo, Mr. and Mrs. W. W. Wickham of Ames, Mr. and Mrs. P. R. Carney and Miss Ruth Rod of Ames and possibly others.
Committal was in the Nevada cemetery.
Mr. Benjamin is survived by his wife Carrie, his brother, G. A. Benjamin of Nevada several nieces and nephews.
