Funeral Services at McCallsburg for Mrs. John Peck

Special to the Journal:
McCallsburg, Nov. 2--The funeral of Mrs. John Peck was held at the Presbyterian church in McCallsburg, Friday afternoon at two o'clock following a prayer service at the house and was largely attended by sympathizing relatives and friends.

Rev. C. B. Driver of Churdan a former pastor of the church was in charge, assisted by Rev. Joseph M. Kennedy of Nevada and Rev. C. J. B. Peck of Blairstown.

The music was furnished by Mrs. F. E. Neil and Mrs. W. H. Reid who sang "Jesus Lover of My Soul" and "Under His Wings" accompanied st the piano by Miss Cleo Tett who also played as a processional "In Silent Thought" by Morrison. The many beautiful floral offerings were cared for by Mrs. M. O. Hankoos and Mis Catherine Craig.

Ushers were Will Thomas and Henry Mehlow, while M. O. Hankoos had charge of transportation.

The pall bearers were the three sons, E. E., E. J. and Millard Peck, John Schauper, G. W. Mills and George Goss.

Burial was made in the family lot in the Nevada cemetery.

Clarissa Minerva Heaton daughter of Mrs. and Mrs. Lewis Heaton, was born in Jefferson County, New York on November 30th, 1854 and passed away Oct. 28, 1938 at the age of 83 years and came with her parents to Iowa at an early age, settling in Tama county. At Toledo on December 25th, 1873, she was united in marriage to John Peck, also of Tama county, and came to Warren township in 1876, locating on a farm three miles northwest of McCallsburg.

To this union was born seven children, four sons and three daughters: Charles Edwin of Crookston, Minnesota; James Lewis is deceased; Earl John of Nevada; Millard of Washington, D. C.; Mrs. John Schauper of McCallsburg and Mrs. George Goss of Blairstown. She is also survived by eleven grandchildren and nine great grandchildren, one sister Mrs. Bertha Hilton of Elberton and six brothers, Edd of McKenzie, North Dakota, Will of Memphis, Minn., Ward of Gary, North Dakota, Alfred of Minneapolis, Arthur of Perth, North Dakota and Myron of Belle Plaine.

Mrs. Peck was one of the pioneers of Warren township, she having seen the community developed from swamp land to a well improved fertile farming district. Among the developments are the building of two railroads and consolidated school system.

Mrs. Peck was vitally interested in the educational and spiritual welfare of the community, having taught school before her marriage and after coming here, she taught in her home until a school house was built near her home.

She united with the Methodist church in early childhood and after coming to Iowa, she affiliated with the various denominations which served the community until the Presbyterian church was organized. Then she became a member of that church and has been an active member as long as her health permitted serving it in various official capacities. She was for years a teacher in the Sunday School and was a member of the Pilgrim class a member of the Aid Society and was especially interested in the Missionary Society of the church, of which she was president at the time of her death also serving as an elder of the church at that time.

Mrs. Peck has been in failing* on, she silently slipped away.

A service was held at the Goss home in Blairstown Thursday forenoon, and the body was brought to the Schauper home here after that.

Mrs. Peck was a good neighbor and a devoted mother and one whom her children and numerous other relatives can rise up and call her blessed.

In the earlier years of residence where she served in many a home during sickness and death, spreading comfort and cheer as she went among the homes.

Dak., Mrs. Estelle Heaton, Mrs. James Irwin and Jimmy Low of Pierson, Mr. and Mrs. Ray Tompkins and three daughters, Morton, Minn., Mr. and Mrs. A. H. Donnelson, Mrs. Laura Peterson, Mr. and Mrs. Lawrence Mills and Allen and Mr. and Jrs.
