Ernest Frank Horn Jr.
March 4, 1920 - February 22, 2014

Ernest Frank Horn, Jr. (Frank), 93, of 1801 20th St. in Ames, died on February 22, 2014 at Israel Family Hospice House in Ames. Memorial services will be held on Friday, February 28 at 10:30 a.m. in the Green Room of the Northcrest Retirement Community with Rev. Fred Lewis presiding. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service. The burial will be a private ceremony at the Ames Municipal Cemetery.

Frank was born on March 4, 1920 in Moline Kansas. He earned two degrees from Kansas State Teachers College in Pittsburg, Kansas (now Pittsburg State University): B.S. in 1942 and M.S. in 1949. He married his college sweetheart, Dorothy Fee, on February 19, 1943. She preceded him in death in 2004.

He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II (1942-1946), spending two years as a small boat officer on an LST in the Mediterranean. His career included 37 years as a football and basketball coach, business education teacher and public school administrator in Kansas and in Iowa. He retired from the Cedar Falls Community Schools in 1983. He and Dorothy moved to Ames in 1986 and to Northcrest in 1988.

Frank was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Ames, an active community volunteer and an avid fan of all sports.

He is survived by his daughter and son-in-law, Beth and Frank Pechacek of Council Bluffs; daughter and son-in-law, Frankee and Jim Oleson of Ames; three grandchildren: Jill Pechacek of Highlands Ranch, CO, Holly (Steve) O'Keefe of Overland Park, KS and Frank III (Natalie) Pechacek of Los Angeles, CA; nine great-grandchildren: Hawk Pechacek, Brooks Pechacek, Hope Pechacek, Charlotte O'Keefe, Lucy O'Keefe, Finnegan O'Keefe, Murphy O'Keefe, Madeline Pechacek and Michael Pechacek.

Frank and Dorothy were passionate about the importance of education.
