Kenneth Lawrence Smith was born April 3, 1925 to Lawrence Elam and Mildred E. (Shore) Smith in Chariton, Iowa. Kenneth graduated from Chariton High School. He served in the United States Army during WWII and was awarded a Purple Heart. After his time in the service, he attended Iowa State College and then the University of Iowa where he received a Bachelor of Arts degree. He married Patricia Gookin on July 17, 1950. She passed away on October 25, 1987.

Kenneth worked as Executive Secretary of the Real Estate Commission for the State of Iowa and was a member of the Masonic Lodge, was a Shriner and a lifelong member of the Ames VFW. He enjoyed traveling and rode RAGBRAI 33 times. Kenneth and Elizabeth "Betty" Carter-Kluck were married April 15, 1989.

Kenneth passed away March 12, 2014 at Windsor Manor in Nevada at 88 years of age.

Kenneth is survived by his wife, Betty Smith, of Ames; two sons, Mark Smith, of Vacaville, California and Scott Smith, of Webster City; one daughter, Susan (Steve) Halterman, of Johnston; four step-children; one sister, Mary Ann (Paul) Hoskins, of West Des Moines; seven grandchildren; twelve great-grandchildren; and one great great-grandchild.

He was preceded in death by his parents and his first wife, Patricia.
