Leo Charles Sutherland
July 28, 1917 to Sept. 21, 2000Leo Charles Sutherland, 83, of Nevada died of complications following surgery on Thursday, Sept. 21, at Mercy Hospital Medical Center in Des Moines.
He was born July 28, 1917, in Elwell to Charles and Pearl (Gross) Sutherland. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He married Henrietta Belle Chitty on July 4, 1938, at her parents' home in State Center. He was a maintenance supervisor at the NADL and retired in 1979. He spent most of his life around Nevada and was a member of the Memorial Lutheran Church and the William F. Ball American Legion Post No. 48. he enjoyed golfing and bowling. In 1972, he was inducted into the Ames Area Bowling Association Hall of Fame.
Survivors include his wife, Henrietta B. Sutherland of Nevada; a daughter, Charlene Kay Carsrud of Nevada; two grandchildren; and a great-granddaughter.
His parents, a sister and a brother preceded him in death.
Funeral services were held Monday, Sept. 25, at Memorial Lutheran Church in Nevada with Pastor Myron Herzberg officiating. Burial followed at the Nevada Municipal Cemetery. A memorial fund has been established in his name at Memorial Lutheran Church in Nevada. Chet Ryan Mortuary, Nevada, handled arrangements.
