Jeanette Thorsbakken was born September 18, 1912, near Story City, Iowa to Hans and Christina (Wicks) Hougland. She was baptized and confirmed at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Story City, where she remained a lifelong member. She was very active in church activities in her younger years.

She graduated from Gilbert High School in 1931. On May 1, 1936, she was united in marriage to Henry (Hank) Thorsbakken. She was employed at Pioneer Grocery Store, Baldus Hatchery and the Maid-Rite in Story City during her working years along with being a homemaker. She also did the bookkeeping for Thorsbakken DX gas station. She has lived in Story City all of her life with the exception of seven years when she lived with her daughter and son-in-law in Toddville, Iowa.

Jeanette made her home at Timberland Village in independent living for many years, which met her needs and independent spirit. In September of 2013 she moved to West Ridge Care Center in Cedar Rapids to be closer to her family. Many of her days at Timberland Village and West Ridge were filled with bingo, jigsaw puzzles, reading, cards, solitaire and seeing her family.

Jeanette Thorsbakken, age 101, passed away Sunday, January 5, 2014, at St. Lukes Hospital in Cedar Rapids.

Jeanette is survived by her daughter, Janet Hill, of Hiawatha, Iowa; her daughter-in-law, Mildred Thorsbakken, of Emmetsburg, Iowa; nine grandchildren, Nathan (Carol) Hauge, Brad Hauge, Bill Hauge, Kris Johnson, Jon Hill, Larry Thorsbakken, Mark Thorsbakken, Cindy (Curtis) Crowe and Jeanine Thorsbakken; fourteen great-grandchildren; eight great great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. She is also survived by her sister-in-law, Ellen Hougland, of Randall, Iowa.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; and her son, Roger. Also preceding her in death are two infant brothers, Selmer and Silas; two sisters, Sylvia Swanson of Springfield, Illinois and Irene Anderson of Story City; brothers, Arlen and Herman Hougland of Story City; and her son-in-law, George Hill.
