William "Bill" Gregory Strabala (1934-2013)

Obituary From Adams Soderstrum Funeral Home, Story County, Iowa.

William (Bill) Gregory Strabala, 79, passed away in his family’s arms on December 27, 2013, at Mary Greeley Medical Center in Ames, Iowa, from complications of leukemia.

Bill Strabala was born on December 24, 1934 to Wallace and Bertha Strabala in Lohrville, Iowa . He graduated from Lohrville High School in 1953 and from Iowa State Teacher’s College (now UNI) with a B.A. in Social Studies. He later completed his M.A. in Library Science. He served his country in the U.S Army from May 1958 to April 1960.

He married Rita Mary Kirlin, on June 8, 1963 and together they had three children. He taught school in Modale, Mondamin, Harlan and Webster City. He spent 29 years working for the Department of Defense Overseas Schools in Germany, Japan and Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. He was a member of the Phi Delta Kappa Overseas, a professional organization for educators. He was also a member of the National Association of Watch and Clock Collectors and was an avid automobile collector & enthusiast. Bill enjoyed genealogy.

Bill is survived by his wife, Rita; his children, Gregory (Ambica), Maureen Byers (Paul) and Erik (Nicole); his grandchildren, Derian and Emma Strabala, Ronan Byers and Ashley and Tierney Strabala; his sister, Patricia Kevlin; a brother, Joseph (Helen); and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents and granddaughter, Esmae Marie Byers.
