John P. Bates

John P. Bates, 88, of rural Nevada died at Story County Medical Center in Nevada January 1, 2005.

John was born February 11, 1916 in rural Nevada, the son of James and Cordelia (Perry) Bates. John graduated from Shipley High School in 1935. He was united in marriage to Margaret G. Quigley on February 11, 1939 at the Evangelical United Brethren Church in Nevada. They farmed in the Shipley area for many years.John was a member of the United Methodist Church and Nevada Masonic Lodge #99.

Survivors include four children: Gary (Anita) Bates of Ames, Iowa, Jim Bates of Bullhead City, Arizona, Marilyn (Ken) Nelson of Nevada, Iowa, Dennis (Sheila) Bates of Nashville, Tennessee; six grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Margaret; an infant son, James; two brothers and 1 sister.

Masonic services were held Tuesday evening at the Bacon Funeral Home. Funeral services were held Wednesday morning at the Nevada United Methodist Church. Burial was in the Nevada Municipal Cemetery.

A memorial fund has been established. Bacon Funeral Home and Crematory was in charge of arrangements.
