West Liberty, Iowa -- Ellen B. Hitchings, 93, West Liberty, died Sunday, Oct. 20, 2002, at the home of her daughter in West Liberty after an extended illness.

Services are 10 a.m. Thursday at First Church United, 1100 N. Calhoun St., West Liberty. Burial will be 2:30 p.m. Thursday at the Nevada Cemetery, Nevada.

Visitation is 4-8 p.m. Wednesday at the church. A memorial fund has been established. The Barker Funeral Home, West Liberty, is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Hitchings was born on Oct. 31, 1908, in LeGrand, the daughter of Aldus and Flora Adkins Hayes. She married Wilbert Earl Hitchings on March 29, 1931, in Eldora. He preceded her in death in 1989.

She graduated from Marshalltown High School in 1928.

She and her husband farmed in Marshall and Story counties, retiring to West Liberty in 1977. She was also employed at Scudder's, Nevada, for many years.

She was a member of the Nevada Christian Church and later the First Church United, West Liberty.

Survivors include two daughters, Marilyn Ruegsegger and her husband, Ken, of West Liberty and Marlys Allen and her husband, Keith, of Penticton, British Columbia; a son, Gerald Hitchings and his wife, Meredith, of Bremerton, Wash.; 11 grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, an infant son, Merrill Duane, two brothers and two sisters.
