Opal Ferden, 91, of Nevada, died of cancer on Friday, March 3, at Story County Long Term Care in Nevada where she had been a resident since August of 1994.
She was born July 27, 1908, on a farm in Milford Township of Story County to Tom and Martha (Poole) Fisher. She attended Milford School until her parents moved to Nevada where completed her education. She married Peter Daniel Ferden on Aug. 11, 1945, in Fort Dodge. She retired in 1973 after 34 years with Donnelley Marketing. She was also employed at the Des Moines Ordinance Plant during World War II. She was a member of the Nevada American Legion Auxiliary, Nevada VFW Auxiliary, Royal Neighbors of America and Moose Lodge in Ames. She was a avid reader and a Story County Hospital Auxiliary member.
Survivors include a daughter, JoAnne A. Hartley of Ankeny; three grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and two great-great-great grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Pete, on March 5, 1989; and a brother, Roy Fisher.
Funeral services were held Wednesday, March 8, at Chet Ryan Mortuary, Nevada, with Pastor Steve Williams officiating. Burial followed in the Nevada Municipal Cemetery. A memorial fund has been established for the Story County Long Term Care or Homeward Hospice of Ames.
