Obituary From Adams Soderstrum Funeral Home, Story County, Iowa.

H. Wayne Fruehling, 89, Story City, Iowa (formerly of Ames) went home to Glory on Tuesday, December 10, 2013.

Wayne was born September 25, 1924 in rural Montrose, Iowa, to Harry Charles and Mae Foust Fruehling. Wayne attended Valley School, a one-room school on the corner of the family farm and graduated high school at the age of 16. After working on the family farm, he served with the 75th Army Division, 291st Infantry Regiment, in the European Theater from 1944 to 1947, and received the Bronze Star Medal.

After the war he returned home to marry his sweetheart, Lois Swinderman, at the Montrose Church of the Nazarene on June 21, 1947, and together they raised four children. Wayne graduated from Olivet Nazarene University in Bourbonnais, IL, and received a Bachelor of Science in Agronomy from Iowa State University in Ames. His career spanned 36 years as a superintendant of several of the Iowa State University Outlying Research Centers, including Seymour, Shenandoah, and ending with 20 years on the Castana Research Center. He received a Superior Service Award from Iowa State University.

After retirement, he and Lois did volunteer agricultural work with the Church of the Nazarene in Swaziland for a year.

Wayne was an active member of the Church of the Nazarene throughout his life. He had a beautiful voice and sang solos and duets, was a worship leader, and taught Adult Sunday School classes. He was a member of the Ames VFW.

Wayne is survived by his wife, Lois, of 66 years; four children, Gary (Juanita) Fruehling of Bradley, IL, Stephen (Virginia) Fruehling of Loveland, CO, Peggy (Greg) Dieter of Ames and John (Sheryl) Fruehling of Fairview, TX; seven grandchildren, Thaddeus Fruehling of Ft. Collins, CO., Michael (Rachel) Fruehling of Bourbonnais, Matthew Fruehling of Bradley, Evan (Rachel) Fruehling of Plano, TX, Ethan Fruehling of Oklahoma City, OK, Ross (Addielin) Blumer of Germany and Kathryn Blumer of Ames; three great-grandchildren, Sarah Blumer of Germany, and Haven and Thane Fruehling of Bourbonnais; one sister, Arlene (Bill) Haner of Ft. Madison; and one sister-in-law, Shirley Fruehling of Des Moines.

He was preceded in death by his parents; an infant daughter, Donna Lois; and two brothers, R. Dale Fruehling and Max Fruehling.

Wayne was the epitome of what it means to be a Godly man, husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, a leader of his family- putting God first in all things. He leaves this earth having blessed his family with a tremendous Christian heritage.
