Roderick D. Powers, born Sept. 18, 1930 in Denver, Colorado, died after battling cancer and went to be with the Lord on Tuesday, November 26, 2013 at Israel Family Hospice House in Ames. He was the third of five children born to Virginia and Cecil Powers. Rod had a B. S. in Agronomy from Colorado State University, and an M. S. in Business Administration from the U. of Colorado. He taught for one year at the Grand Canyon College in Phoenix, Arizona, and for 31 years in the Department of Business Administration at Iowa State University. He served during the Korean War, 1953-54, but fortunately, was stationed in Germany as a 1st Lt. in the Ordnance Corps of the U. S. Army. He is survived by his wife, Sunny, whom he married in 1952 in Denver, Colorado.

They were blessed with their five surviving children: Mark (Denva) of Adelaide, Australia; Melody (Delmar) Davis Mains of Ames; Cynthia (Earl) Albertson of Boone; Dr. Kit (Tracy) of Brewer, Maine; and Rick (Delana) of LaCrosse, WI; twelve grandchildren, plus five great-grandchildren.

Rod is survived by his brother Norman and sister Ruth, Idledale, Colorado; his sister, Rosie (Bud) Weatherby, Monrovia, California; and sister-in-law Shirley Powers, Longmont, Colorado. He was preceded in death by a brother, Douglas, his parents, and a beloved son-in-law, Harold Davis, who was killed while serving God in Bogota, Colombia.

One of Rod’s greatest joys was in recounting his salvation experience at the First Christian Church in Englewood, Colorado, under the ministry of Rev. Sherman Miller, when he, his two brothers and his father all received Christ as Savior on the same day. He was a faithful member of Campus Baptist (now CrossRoad Baptist) Church in Ames; he loved the worship service and enjoyed singing praises to God. His favorite singing group was his family and he always requested music when there was a family get-together. He was very proud of their accomplishments in serving the Lord and faithfully prayed for each one over the years.
