Dorothy L. Ekberg passed away peacefully on Thursday, November 21, 2013 in Ames. She was a resident of Green Hills Retirement Community.

Dorothy was born on August 17, 1922 in Hankinson, ND to William and Cora Heley. The family moved to Fergus Falls where Dorothy graduated from Fergus Falls High School. She received a bachelor of arts degree in sociology from Carlton College. Dorothy was united in marriage to Carl E. Ekberg, Jr. on May 25, 1944. A few days after their wedding Carl reported for duty in the U.S. Navy serving on a seaplane tender in the Pacific Theater.

Following discharge from the Navy in 1946, Dorothy and Carl returned to the University of Minnesota where Carl pursued graduate studies in structural engineering. The family made their home in Minneapolis, and thereafter in Fargo, ND and Bethlehem, PA. In 1959, Carl became the Head of the Civil Engineering Department at Iowa State University.

Dorothy served as advisor for the C.E. Student Wives Club, and was a member of the University Faculty Women’s Club, P.E.O. and the Collegiate Presbyterian Church. Dorothy’s greatest joy was her family. She was an avid bridge player, loved to read and was a devoted fan of ISU Athletics. Dorothy and Carl traveled extensively throughout the world and after retirement in 1988 enjoyed many winters in Naples, FL.

Dorothy is survived by two daughters, Gretchen (Jurgen) Brommelhoff of Acton, MA, and Janet Ekberg of San Rafael, CA; two sons, Carl (Patricia) Ekberg III of Rutherford, TN and Thomas Ekberg of Black Diamond, WA; nine grandchildren; and several great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Carl; her parents; her brother, Ray Heley; and her sister, Frances Smith.

Memorial services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, November 30, at Collegiate Presbyterian Church in Ames. Adams Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Memorial contributions may be directed to Collegiate Presbyterian Church or to the Carl and Dorothy Ekberg Structural Engineering Scholarship Fund in care of the ISU Foundation.
