Joe Vernon Crawford was born August 30, 1921 to Charles W. and Elinor (Neel) Crawford in Otis, Colorado. He spent his childhood in Cedar Rapids, Iowa and graduated from Franklin High School. Joe then earned Bachelor of Science and Master’s Degrees in Mechanical Engineering from Iowa State University. He served in the United States Army during WWII, from 1943 to 1946. Joe and Betty Brown were married in Cedar Rapids on September 17, 1950. He worked for Rockwell Collins for 9 years and then taught mechanical and freshman engineering at Iowa State from 1958 to 1987.

Joe was a member of Bethesda Lutheran Church and the choir, the Ames Kiwanis and the Red Friar’s Club. He was an avid singer, golfer, bowler, antiquer, ballroom dancer and Cyclone fan. Joe was a wonderful husband, father and grandfather.

Joe passed away September 28, 2013 at Northcrest Community in Ames at 92 years of age.

Joe is survived by his son, Steve (Pat) Crawford of Urbandale; his daughter, Ellen Mullen of Ames; his grandchildren, Matthew, Joseph (Rachel), Steffanie (RJ), Elizabeth, Leanna and Allison; and three great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his brother, Riley Crawford; and his beloved wife, Betty.

Memorials may be designated to Bethesda Lutheran Church in Ames.
