Obituary From Adams Soderstrum Funeral Home, Story County, Iowa.
David Andrew Peterson was born in Ames to Aldor C. and Lina (Boss) Peterson on March 7, 1945. He attended Ames schools, graduating from Ames High School in 1963. He was able to attend his 50th class reunion just two weeks before his death. His degrees, Bachelor of Architecture in 1968 and Master of Architecture in 1973, were earned from Iowa State University. During the years 1969 – 1971 Dave served his country in the Army Corps of Engineers, stateside and in Vietnam. On June 21, 1969, he married Mary Alice Pascale. They met in the Ames Municipal Band, both flutists. Dave worked as a licensed architect for several private firms. His primary employer for thirty-seven years was Iowa State University. He retired from ISU in March 2013 as Manager of Architectural and Engineering, Quality Assurance/Quality Control with Facilities Planning and Management.
David’s Christian faith was the guiding force of his life. He served Memorial Lutheran in many capacities, especially through the Property Committee and singing tenor in the choir. Dave loved to sing. He was a loyal supporter and audience member for his wife’s music endeavors. His professional memberships included the American Institute of Architects, the Construction Specifications Institute, the International Code Council, and the Central Iowa US Green Building Council.
The family cabin in northern Minnesota, which he built with his parents, was dear to his heart. He enjoyed working with computers and reading about new construction products and designs. The condition of the planet and our responsibility to preserve resources concerned him greatly. He was also very good at fixing things.
David passed away at his home October 10, 2013 at the age of 68. He and his doctors had tried to out maneuver cancer for four and a half years.
David is survived by his wife, Mary; daughters, Rebecca (Chris) Zangmeister and Debra Peterson; sister, Nancy (Lind) Sanford; brother, Aldor (Carol) Peterson, Jr.; grandsons, John and Levi Zangmeister; nephews, Mark (Roma) Sanford, Stephen (Molly) Sanford, Dan (Judith) Sanford, and John (Nati) Peterson; niece, Sarah Peterson; and great nieces and nephews.
His parents, grandparents, in-laws, and several aunts and uncles preceded him in death.
