Obituary From Adams Soderstrum Funeral Home, Story County, Iowa.

Grace Josephine Anderson Benson, 98 of Story City, Iowa passed away on the first day of autumn, Sunday, September 22, 2013 at Timberland Village in Story City. Visitation is 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday, September 24 at Timberland Village in Story City. Funeral services will be held 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, September 25 at St. Petri Lutheran Church in Story City, of which she was a member. Burial will be at Mt. Olive Cemetery, Randall, Iowa.

Grace was born June 9, 1915 is Randall, Iowa to Arthur C. and Ovidia (Tjernagel) Anderson. Following her 1932 graduation from Randall High School she was employed in Des Moines for two years and then four years as bookkeeper and clerk at Peterson’s General Store in Randall. On September 22, 1938 she was united in marriage to Walter J. Benson at Elim Lutheran Church in Randall. During her marriage she lived in Randall, Spencer, McCallsburg, Ames, West Des Moines and Story City. Grace was an active member of the Lutheran Church, where throughout her lifetime she was a member of singing groups including choir, sextets, trios and duets. She was also active in Sunday School, the church women organizations and as a Luther League leader. She served 8 years as Vice-President and President of the Des Moines Conference of American Lutheran Church Women, was a board member of Bethany Manor and the first woman elected as a Deacon at Bethany Lutheran Church in McCallsburg. Prior to her 65th birthday, she worked seven years as a waitress at Happy Chef in Story City.

Her vocation was homemaking, her avocation was people. She loved sports and often said she’d rather play catch than eat. God’s beautiful earth was so much appreciated, as were family, music and friends.

Grace was preceded in death by: her beloved husband of 62 years in 2000; a stillborn granddaughter in 1981; grandson Adam Paul Benson in 1984; daughter Barbara Ann Everist in 1986; her parents; two brothers, Arnold and Orlin Anderson; and three sisters Arlene and Julie Ann Anderson and Bernice Olson. Survivors are: son-in-law Gary Everist of Surprise, Arizona; daughter Mary Bentsen of Eldora, Iowa; son Paul (Pam) Benson of Des Moines; brother-in-law Edwin Benson of Little Rock, Arkansas; Grandchildren Laura Clark, David and Mark Everist, Eric and Aron Rodemeyer, Megan Bentsen, Zachary and Sarah Benson; 7 great grandchildren and 5 great-great grandchildren.
