Sylvester Freman Bates Has Gone On - Funeral Services Held From the U.B. Church March 22

Sylvester Freman Bates was born near Milsdale, Mich., September, 18, 1856 and died at his home in Cambridge, Iowa, March 20, 1928 being 71 years, 6 months, and 2 days of age.

He was the son of James and Arvilla Bates, moving to Iowa in early life, settling on a farm at Walnut Grove.

He was a devoted husband and father and to this union, ten children were born, nine of whom are still living, five daughters: Mrs. Myrtle Yeoman, Indianola, Iowa, Mrs. Arvilla Weston, Laurel, Nebr. Mrs. Maurine Woods, Des Moines, Iowa, Mrs. Viola Moore and Mrs. Maude Smith, Ames, Iowa, and four sons: Theron of Chicago, Ill., Glenn and Clifford of Ames, Iowa, and Kenneth of Cambridge.

Besides his widow and family he leaves to mourn his death, one sister, Mrs. Jane Shearer of Ames, one brother, Theron Bates of Walnut Grove, thirty-five grandchildren and six great grandchildren.

Mr. Bates became a member of the United Brethren church of Walnut Grove and was baptized in that faith.

When he moved to Cambridge he failed to renew his relationship with the church, but during his last illness he renewed his convent with God and left his testimony that all was well.

One of the most beautiful traits of his life was that he was a great lover of little children. He leaves a host of friends to mourn his departure.

The funeral was largely attended and was held at the United Brethern church March 22 at 2 p.m. conducted by Rev. Earl Platner, assisted by Rev. Donnie Platner. Music was furnished by a mixed quartet with Mrs. C. L. Fish at the piano. The floral offerings were unusually beautiful and profu e*. Interment in the Cambridge cemetery.
