HERBERT ALLEN SHEARMAN

Herbert Allen Shearman, 85, of 235 L Ave., former mayor of Nevada, died of a heart ailment Monday, Feb. 27, 1984, at the Story County Hospital.

Services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 29, at the Memorial Lutheran Church in Nevada with Pastor John Chadwick officiating. Burial will be at the Nevada Cemetery. Military services will be held at the graveside.

Herbert Shearman was born to James Taylor and Emma (Eddy) Shearman on Oct. 12, 1898 in Dow City. He graduated from Kirkman High School in 1916, and served in the Army during World War I. Upon his discharge from the service, he attended Des Moines University.

He moved to Nevada in 1927, and was employed by the county treasurer's office.

He married Mary Sorensen on March 22, 1941, in Nevada. He re-enlisted in the Army during World War II, and following his discharge was employed by the State of Iowa as an auditor for 26 years before retiring. He had recently been employed by Coover-Huebner Chevrolet Oldsmobile.

Shearman was mayor of Nevada for 12 years. He was also a member of the Memorial Lutheran Church, a charter member of the State of Iowa American Legion Post, the American Legion Post in Nevada, the Masonic Lodge, a Past Master of the Des Moines Consistory, the Za-Ga-Zig Shrine and the Nevada Lions.

He is survived by his wife, Mary; one daughter, Rita Jo (Mrs. Mike) Snyder of Ankeny; two brothers, Glenn Shearman of Siren, Wisc., and Vernon Shearman of Lake View; and three grandsons, Shane, Travis and Joshua.

He was preceded in death by an infant son, one brother and two sisters.
