Obituary From Adams Soderstrum Funeral Home, Story County, Iowa.
Arlene Margaret Smith Gere, 96 passed away on September 11, 2013 at Bethany Life Communities in Story City, Iowa. Visitation will be 5 to 7 p.m. Friday, September 20th at the Bethany Life Chapel in Story City. Funeral services will be held 10:30 a.m., Saturday, September 21st with visitation 1 hour before service at St. Petri Lutheran Church in Story City.
Arlene was born to parents Coy and Vera Smith on July 18, 1917 in Webb, (Clay County) IA. She was baptized on Sept. 1, 1918 at the Stratford Lutheran Church, Stratford, IA with Rev. C.A. Callerstrom as pastor. Then she was confirmed on Sept. 13, 1931 at the Stratford Lutheran Church with Rev. Anton Chell as pastor. Their class songs were: “Take my Life and Let it Be” and “O, Jesus I have Promised”. On May 31, 1934 she married Myron Gere at Elim Lutheran Church in Randall with the Rev. G.O. Paulsrud officiating and the witnesses were: Alvin Gere (brother) and Helen Gere. Myron Gere died Feb. 21, 1991 in Story City, IA.
After getting married, Arlene worked out of her home doing painting and wallpapering. She was a telephone operator for 9 years at the Story City Telephone Company. Then she worked 25 years at Bourn’s doing micro-electronic parts assembly. She was active in her community with school activities (band parents, and athletic parents organizations) and later on at the senior center. She was a member of St. Petri Lutheran Church and Sons of Norway. She loved to care for her flower gardens and traveled to many countries on all continents. She always enjoyed being with her family.
She is survived by: two sons, Lawrence (Kathleen) Gere and Eugene (Ann Marie) Gere, of Hugo, MN; grandchildren, Paul (Susan) Gere, Kari (Bruce) Larson, Greg (Jane) Gere, Marlee (Joe) Knickerbocker, and Sarah (Kevin) Brevik; great grandchildren, Christopher Gere, Kayla Gere, Leanne (Kerry) Gotvaslee, Amanda Gere, Aaron Knickerbocker, Andrew Knickerbocker, Kate Knickerbocker, Arielle (Spencer) Sundberg, Lars Brevik, Piper Larson and Finn Larson; great-great grandchildren, Reagan Gotvaslee and Kallen Gotvaslee. Preceded in death by: her parents, husband, brother Milton and 2 great grandchildren, Karin and Ryan.
